In a report that is to be discussed later this week at Lambeth Council’s cabinet meeting states: “The extension from the Kennington Loop to Battersea would preclude any alternative extension of the Northern line to areas such as Brixton and/or Streatham, although TfL has stated its opposition to any extension to Streatham on the basis of cost, no plausible external funding being available, and the ensuing overcrowding on the current Northern line.”
Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Councillor Alex Davies said: “This is a short term plan ignoring the long term regeneration needs. This is a massive betrayal of the people of Streatham and those in the south of the borough who desperately need an extension of the tube.”
However, Conservative Council leader for Wandsworth, Councillor Ravi Govindia, believes ‘the extension is the key to unlocking development through Nine Elms and Vauxhall.’
The plans are due to be discussed at Lambeth’s cabinet meeting on January 16, at Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton Hill from 7pm. For more information about the meeting, look here.
